Bigger Bang
Decarbonising Industries
From cement cities to steel buildings, watch these short animations we created, illustrating high polluting industries and the science behind decarbonising them.
We were asked to make these animated clips for a series of films talking about high polluting industries and how we can start decarbonising them.
For each film we were responsible for creating a 10 second opening introducing the industry and an animation illustrating the science behind the plan for decarbonization.
The three industries that these films focused on decarbonising were:
Cement Film
Cement Opening
“From homes to offices, bridges and canals…”
This opening needed to show cement and all the places we find it, and what better way to show where concrete is used than to build a miniature city out of it.
We made over 20 kg worth of cement pieces for this animation by creating rubber molds and casting building and road pieces in concrete. Then we animated it by adding cement pieces layer by layer, frame by frame to build the city.
Cement Opening, Making Of
Cement Science
For the cement film we were asked to create an animation in three scenes illustrating the science behind an alternative way of catching and storing CO2.
This paper animation was made with multiple layers of cut coloured paper to reveal moving shapes.
You can see the full film that these clips were apart of here.
Steel Film
Steel Opening
Steel Opening, Making Of
As with the cement film, we wanted to use the medium we were talking about throughout this opening animation. By using objects made out of metal we were able to create creative imagery while showing the multitude of places that we use steel in our everyday life.
The pylons were created completely with nails and bolts while the final building was made with metal pieces that were cut down every frame as we zoomed out.
Steel Science
For the steel film’s science clip we were asked to show how solar panels work to create electricity. Using the same format as the first film we used a book to illustrate the voice over’s narration.
You can see the full film that these clips were apart of here.
Chemicals Film
Chemicals Opening
For the chemicals opening we created a fluid animation that showed a variety of different everyday objects that contain chemicals.
